“DON’T MESS WITH
TEXAS” SCHOLARSHIPS SPONSORED BY Advantage Rent A Car AND THE TEXAS
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS AWARDED
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (). Advantage Rent A Car and its’
partner, the Texas Department of Transportation are pleased to announce
the winners of the “Don’t Mess with Texas (DMWT)” scholarship. The
scholarship program was designed to award high school students for their
efforts to reduce litter in their communities. Scholarships were awarded
to three deserving students totaling $5,000.
Amy Schwertner from Miles, Texas created a litter-prevention program in
her hometown called “Be a Proud Citizen, Don’t Litter”. She financed her
project through a grant received from her local Wal-Mart store,
producing car litterbags that were distributed to Wal-Mart shoppers as
they departed the store. Amy plans to use her $3,000 scholarship to
attend Texas Tech University where she will study food and nutrition.
Ore High City, Texas High School senior Megan Davis received a $1,000
scholarship for her initiative to solve a litter problem called “Can
Wars”. This program challenged each grade level to pick up and recycle
soda cans. Her project not only encouraged students to stop littering,
it enabled them to start their own school-wide recycling project. Megan
plans to use the scholarship money to attend Kilgore College where
she’ll study nursing.
The El Paso area may see the number of litterers on the decline thanks
to Franklin High School senior Allison Armendariz. Allison received a
$1,000 scholarship for creating the Franklin High School “ecology club”.
This club was started to drive student participation at litter cleanups
across the El Paso area benefiting not only Franklin High School, but
the entire community. She plans to use the scholarship money to attend
Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where she’ll study business.
“Rewarding these young citizens’ leadership and hard work with a college
scholarship is something we are honored to provide,” said Mark Walker,
vice president of Advantage Rent A Car. “Their efforts will undoubtedly
inspire others to keep their community clean, which will hopefully carry
over to when they travel on Texas roads.”
